SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Franklin Elementary School held its annual Back to School Barbecue on Sept. 18. Sponsored by the PTO, the barbecue took place on school grounds from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and close to 500 people came out for a chance to celebrate the new school year with their Franklin School family.
Throughout the evening PTO members served up hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken, beans, corn and salad for the close to and, after eating, many kids put their hula hoop skills to the test or played catch on the playground while others took to the swings and slides with their siblings and friends.
“This event is a great way to get everyone together and for our students and families to get to know each other. It’s also great to see the older siblings who have moved on to Grant come back with their parents and younger siblings,” said Franklin Principal Ralph Errico, noting that the annual event has taken place at the school for more than 10 years.
Families were also asked to bring a nut-free dessert to share and many came bearing homemade goodies, which were entered into the event’s annual bake off. Attendees sampled the sweet treats throughout the night and voted for their favorite with first grader Eliana Plum taking home the honors – and a Dunkin Donuts gift card – this year.
“The PTO does a great job and tries to do something once a month to get the parents and students together,” said Errico. “Tonight was a beautiful night for a barbecue.”
