SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield Girl Scout Troop 65388 will dedicate a Children’s Reading Garden at the South Plainfield Public Library on Saturday, April 23. The dedication ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in back of the building near the Children’s Room followed by a special story time and craft program.

To earn their Bronze Award, members of Troop 65388 were required to work together as a group and  come up with a project that serves the community and is sustainable. The end result was the Children’s Reading Garden, which will feature a multi-colored painted bench, moveable barrels with live perennials planted inside, bird houses, and colorfully painted flowers made with pressed wood and recycled bottle caps.

During Saturday’s dedication ceremony, the girls will speak about their project and Mayor Matt Anesh will be on hand to present the troop with a proclamation. Members of the South Plainfield Borough Council and South Plainfield Library Board will also be present.

Troop 65388 is currently comprised of nine girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grade with the following members earning the Bronze Award: Alanna, Alexis, Alyssa, Antonella, Bianca, Emma, Jillian, Kirstyn, Olivia, Rebecca and Sofia.

“I am just so proud of their dedication and their hard work,” said Troop 65388 Leader Roxanne Rivera, noting that the project took about a year from start to finish.

According to Rivera, the project would not have been possible without the help from parents, the generous donation of supplies from Home Depot, and the support of those affiliated with the library. “I want to thank everyone who helped make this possible,” she said.

Following the dedication ceremony, Ms. Mija and Library Director Linda Hansen will read The Lorax and a special character from the book will be on hand to hand out seedlings to attendees. A craft in the library’s multipurpose/programming room will also be offered.

“We are extremely thankful to the members of Girl Scout Troop #65388 for their thoughtful and generous donation,” said Library Director Linda Hansen of the troop's forthcoming donation. “With the warm weather upon us, we are hopeful the reading garden will be a wonderful new addition and something we hope so many of our young readers and their families will enjoy”
