SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Years of service to the Boy Scouts and months of dedication to fulfill an Eagle Scout project came to fruition this week for South Plainfield resident Joseph Kelly.

A member of the Class of 2018 and Troop 207, Kelly compiled a ‘Wall of Fame’ at borough hall to recognize the men and women who, since 1961, have served as honorary grand marshals of the  South Plainfield Labor Day Parade. The ‘Wall of Fame,’ located in the municipal building’s main hallway, was officially put up on July 15.

Kelly personally feels that ‘South Plainfield and its Labor Day Parade are important’ and told TAPinto that he chose to honor the past grand marshals with an ‘enduring recognition’ because they are the men and women who have 'played a role in making this town great.’

This project honors all these people who helped shape the town I live in,” Kelly said. “It was rewarding to learn about all these peoples and I feel this was a nice way to honor all these people who helped build our town.”

To complete the project, Kelly sought community assistance from the community to collect photos and background information on 34 of the close to 70 former grand marshals who served from 1961 to 2017 with funding for the project coming in the form of monetary donations.

“Thank you to everyone who donated and allowed me to make this project a reality,” said Kelly, noting that financial support paid for the ink to print the photos, the frames, and more.  “It took a lot to put this project together and a lot of people helped me along the way and I want to thank all of them.”

“What a wonderful accomplishment by Joe Kelly on his Eagle Scout project honoring our Labor Day Parade Grand Marshals,” said Mayor Matt Anesh noting that special thanks also go to other members of Troop 207, including Tommy O'Brien and Robby Kelly along with Assistant Scout Master Ed Prehn, and Scout Master John Mocharski, who is also an honoree.

“This project honors many of the men and women who have played an important role in our community. Be sure to stop in to borough hall and check it out,” added Anesh.
