SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Jose Guardado and Italo Cardoso each had two goals and an assist to lead the South Plainfield Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Voorhees. The victory advances the Tigers to the second round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 State tournament.
“We scored very early in the match which sometimes could be a bad thing considering we did not know too much about Voorhees, said Tigers’ Coach Anthony Perfilio.” “When we score early we tend to lay back a little. Fortunately we were able to put a second one in after Voorhees was a playing a little more offensive in our defensive third.”
South Plainfield juniors Nick Polizzano and Jake Alba each recorded an assist in the Tiger victory. The Tigers peppered Voorhees with 15 shots on goal. South Plainfield goalie Kyle Dennis had four saves and Diego Chumpitaz also had a save in net for the Tigers.
The Tigers take on Somerville in the second round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 tournament this Thursday November 6, 2014 in South Plainfield.
“I thought the boys played well enough to win the game,” said Tigers’ Coach Anthony Perfilio. “The State tournament is very different beast....no matter what seed you are anything is possible. A few years ago, a 16 seed won the section. I always tell my team to forget about records in this tournament. Every team you play will be good. If you peak at the right moment, you can make a run. I would love to see our boys make it all the way. They deserve it. I want nothing more than for them to be successful and to remember this season for the rest of their lives.”
