SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -While many students who participate in the Holy Savior Academy 5K & Family Fun Walk will do so as a form of school and class pride – the class with the most participation will earn a dress down day before the end of the school year – they also know their involvement financially supports their school and the local community.
“I have been running the Holy Savior Academy 5K for a couple of years now,” said Sarah Adlassnig, an eighth-grader at Holy Savior Academy. “Every year I am excited to run with my friends and family to support a great cause.”
This year the cause is not just Holy Savior and the programs it provides to students, but also the Pink SOCS Foundation.
“This race means a lot to me because a portion of the profit goes to Pink SOCS,” said Sarah. “This group helps people in South Plainfield and other local towns affected by breast cancer. It makes me feel good to not only finish the race, but also to be helping those affected by breast cancer.”
Knowing that a cancer diagnosis is stressful enough without the added concern of monetary needs, Pink SOCS assists families who are in need of financial support as a result of any type of cancer. They also award academic scholarships to children that have been affected by cancer.
“Holy Savior teaches our children to think beyond themselves and consider the needs of their community,” said Carl Adlassnig, Sarah’s father and the event chairperson. “That’s why I think partnering with a charity that helps our own neighbors in their time of need is so important. The kids are coming out and having fun, supporting their school, but also giving to charity.”
The run is June 6th and starts at 9 a.m. with the walk to follow right after. Registration is $30 for the 5K or $10 for students. Walkers will pay $10. Participants are encouraged to make an additional donation when they register or solicit pledges from family and friends. Pink SOCS will also collect donations on site and have items for sale to benefit their work.
The race starts and finishes at the school on South Plainfield Avenue and follows a United States Track & Field certified 5K course. It’s a flat course that is great for younger runners or people looking to do their first 5K as well as the experienced athlete. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top runners in age category and event t-shirts are available to the first 100 runners registered.
“We hope to see a lot of our Holy Savior families, friends and supporters at the event this year,” said Carl Adlassnig. “It’s a great way to celebrate our school, our students and the impending end of the school year. Plus, you get to support a wonderful charity that touches so many lives.”
