SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - This year's annual Labor Day 5K run will mark the 23rd year when the race kicks off September 2 on Lake Street.
The run, which draws about 250 runners, is sponsored by the South Plainfield Alliance for Substance Awareness, The Club at Ricochet, and the South Plainfield Education Foundation.
Last year over 30 walkers also took part in a 1.5 mile family fitness walk for the first time. According to Education Foundation President Marge Reedy, she and her group "hope to increase this number in support of family togetherness and a positive drug-free, fun-filled fitness lifestyle."
Runners who pre-register by August 15 pay just $15, with the fee going to $20 after that date. The first 100 runners to pre-register also receive a free t-shirt. The cost for the family walk is $5 per person/family, with the first 40 pre-registrants also receiving a free t-shirt.
The race will begin on Lake Street at 9:30 a.m., with registration starting at 8:15 a.m. Computer timing and race results will be posted on the Internet by Best Race Systems.
Runners raise money for scholarships honoring former South Plainfield teacher and adminstrator Bill Beegle and the memory of Brayden Carr. The Brayden Carr scholarship will award funds to a student with a seizure disorder.
