Lady Tigers' hitters show big in 11-1 victory over Carteret

SOUTH PLAINFIELD- Coming off their first loss of the season, and with pivotal games looming in the upcoming week, the South Plainfield High School softball team seemed to be in need of a big win when they hosted Carteret on their home field earlier today.

When they needed it most, the Lady Tigers’ hitters came through with a stellar performance, possibly one of their best of the season. A well-rounded team effort at the plate gave South Plainfield (14-1) an impressive 11-1 victory over the Ramblers (14-3).

After the game, South Plainfield head coach Don Panzarella said he was most impressed by the fact that all off hitters contributed to the win. The Lady Tigers recorded 19 hits during the game, and all nine of their hitters tallied at least one hit.

“Everybody contributed and that’s what we needed,” Panzarella said. “We needed a big game like this, cause we really haven’t hit that well all year, so I was proud of how they played today.”

While South Plainfield dominated for virtually all of the game, at the very beginning it looked like they were in for a long one. Three pitches into the first at-bat of the game, Carteret junior Caitlyn Murray blasted a pitch from Katherine Vill deep for a solo home run. The homer went on to be Carteret’s only score of the game though, as Vill gave up just three more hits, while striking out five batters and walking none.

It didn’t take long for South Plainfield’s hitters to bounce back from that early setback either, as a well placed hit from Camryn Schaeffer in the bottom of the first sent two runners home for the lead. Three at-bats later, freshman Cameron Marks smashed a deep three-run homer. Marks standout performance was well-timed in more than one way, as today happened to be her birthday.

Four runs in the third inning with RBI hits from Vill, Schaeffer and Jennifer Grasso extended the lead to 11-1, which eventually forced a mercy rule stoppage in the fifth inning.

The South Plainfield win handed Carteret their first conference loss of the season, while lifting the Lady Tigers’ conference record to 10-1.

Panzarella said the today's performance puts his players in a good position to brush off the 1-0 loss they suffered to Bishop Ahr on Thursday, and that it'll also get them ready for their final stretch of division and conference games.

“I think it’s awesome, we set the tempo for Monday,” the coach said. “We have three games left in the conference, so you don’t want to get beat again and then try to go and play at Iselin Kennedy on Monday. I think they needed that little bit of a lift, even though the game we lost the other day wasn’t a bad loss. It was a bad loss as far as their record, but it wasn’t a bad loss in how they played. It was a 1-0 game, and it was just that they missed the little things to score, and today we did a lot.”

“Everybody contributed,” Panzarella added. “If we’re going to win anything at the end of the year, it has to be that way.”
