SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Errors were costly for the Colonia High School varsity softball team as two in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed South Plainfield to obtain a walk-off victory over the Patriots Wednesday in South Plainfield.
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the home half of the seventh, Tigers’ Naomi Nieves reached on an infield error and Nicole Gerardi followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Nieves to second base.
Makayla Sosa slapped a single up the middle and the Colonia outfielder bobbled the ball and Nieves scored from second for the 3-2 win.
Caity Hughes went 1-or-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the first for South Plainfield. Winning pitcher Katherine Vill, who pitched a complete game, struck out four, allowed two runs, and walked a batter. -She is now 11-1 on the season. Vill also helped her case at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
With the win, South Plainfield extends their winning streak to 14, while the Patriots drop to 5-9.
South Plainfield returns to the field Friday, as they travel to Raider country to take on North Brunswick. The Lady Tigers blanked North Brunswick 12-0 back on April 11.
Then, South Plainfield hosts Monroe on Saturday morning for a critical Greater Middlesex Conference White Division matchup. The Lady Tigers are 11-1 in conference play while the Falcons are 10-2, and 11-2 overall. South Plainfield edged out Monroe in Monroe 6-3 on April 13, and this game will go a long way in determining the division champs.
