The South Plainfield Suburban Woman's Club and the South Plainfield Cultural Arts Commission hosted the 4th Annual Spelling Bee on January 23, 2018, with 23 students who registered for the event.  Nineteen students from 4th and 5th grade attended the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs local spelling bee.  Thank you to our judges:  South Plainfield Borough Council persons Derryck White, Joseph Wolak, Jon Dean, Christine Faustini, Council President Robert Bengivenga, former Board of Education Past President and South Plainfield High School PTO Vice President Sharon Miller, South Plainfield Business Association President and owner of the South Plainfield Observer Nancy Grennier, SP Observer reporter Mary Ann Bourbeau, Shannon Jefferys Suburban Woman's Club member and Columbia Bank Manager, Stephanie Bartfalvi Public Celebrations Committee Secretary, Annmarie Stoeckel Supervisor of Technology ad Library Board appointment Rep for the South Plainfield School District.

The Cultural Arts Commission donated the first place winner $50.00 gift card and copies of the word lists and the Suburban Woman's Club donated the 2nd and 3rd place winner $25.00 gift cards.  The Suburban Woman's Club members who attended and donated refreshments were April Bengivenga, Grace Bertucci, RoseMarie Pelton, Diana Gallo, Lucy Hudson, Diana Catone and the Cultural Arts commission members who attended were:  Joan O'Brien, Mark Abramson, Mindy Gerber, Priscilla LaPorte Bengivega, Tim McConvllle, Diane Pender and the help of Suzanne Lepore.    The students  who participated were:  Kruti Kartik - 4th grade Roosevelt School; Camila Chavez - 4th grade Riley School, Sameer Vechalapu - 4th grade Roosevelt; Eriel Catalonotti - 5th grade Grant School; Katrina Rasmussen - 5th grade Grant School;  Rudra Patel - 5th grade Grant;  Sydney Villanueva - 4th grade Holy Savior; Michelle Jimmy - 4th grade Holy Savior; Paityn Moniz-D'Souza -5 th grade Grant; Ashwini Devaraj - 5th grde Grant; Lucia Rose Merendino - 4th Grade Koinonia Academy; Sephora Beg - 5th grade Grant; Caleigh Banaria - 4th grade Holy Savior; Emma Figueiredo - 4th grade Holy Savior;  Aiden McCarthy - 4th grade; Aadi Shah - 5th grade Grant;  Arjav Shah - 4th grade Kennedy; Ava Cabrera - 5th grade Grant; Paige McAuley - 5th grade Grant. 

The NJSFWC held the College Spelling Bee on February 11, 2018 and Sameer Vechalapu -4 th grade Roosevelt placed fourth in the Bee an will be the Alternate for the State Spelling Bee.  Thank you to Senior Center Director Tree Olano for all you help with the Senior Center arrangements and Linda for set up.  The first place winner was Michelle Jimmy; 2nd place was Sameer Vechalapu and 3rd place Aadi Shahand 4th place/alternate Katrina Rasmussen.

Carly Kensey Graduates from ECU

Adele DeLeeuw Scholarships Awarded to Area Students

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Four former South Plainfield high school students received a total of $9,325 in scholarships from the Adele DeLeeuw Scholarship Fund at a dinner held Tuesday, June 12th, at the Spain Inn in Piscataway.  The scholarships are financed by a bequest from Adele DeLeeuw, longtime Plainfield resident, author of 75 books, journalist and arts activist.
