Letter to the Editor:

In honor of Black History Month, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, who wanted to inspire the South Plainfield Middle School students,  invited them to a screening of the movie "Hidden Figures".  The untold story of three African-American women who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. Space Program,  Dorothy Johnson Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Coleman Johnson, mathematicians and unsung heros,  were pioneers who helped to lead the way for the recognition of women at NASA.  Lt. Governor Guadagno has been invited by the South Plainfield Women's Leadership Team to speak to the South Plainfield Middle School young ladies for the past two years  and has always stressed that the female students need to take advantage of all opportunities available to them and to succeed through their determination and desire for advancement.  Dr. Allison Frazier Jackson of Allison Jackson Associates, Visionaries Who Execute and Women's One Thousand Leadership Group were in attendance at the screening.  Nannette Wright, Ph.D., Systems Engineer Principle at Lockheed Martin, received the STEM Award given by Lt. Governor Guadagno for her program "Million Women Mentors".  South Plainfield Middle School Assistant Principal Tamekia Grier-Dupiche presented a poster signed by the Middle School Students thanking the Lt. Governor for this educational chance to view the untold story that made history by the three women of NASA.

Thank you to South Plainfield Superintendent Dr. Noreen Lishak, Middle School Principal Roger Vroom and Assistant Principal Dupiche for recognizing this important role of these three women pioneers in NASA and accepting this invitation that was received by South Plainfield Borough Council President Derryck White and Women's Leadership Team member Debbie Boyle.  All South Plainfield Middle School students' names were placed in a "hat" and 100 students' names were drawn for the viewing of the movie.  Students,  with signed parental permission slips attended the movie.  The students that attended  the viewing of Hidden Figures watch the viewing in awe and many of the scenes were viewed through tears, along with Councilwoman Faustini.  Thank you to Lt. Governor Guadagno for selecting the South Plainfield Middle School students for such an honor.
