Dear Editor,

I believe it is important that elected officials and those running for office let the voters know their

position on important issues. The morally indefensible policy of separating children from their

parents without a plan to reunite these families has led to unimaginable suffering for both the

parents and the children. As a mother who has lost a child, I know firsthand the pain that these

mothers are going through when their child is ripped away from them. As a teacher, I see the

panic on the faces of children suffering from separation anxiety on the first day of school,

knowing that their parents will be back at the end of the day. Imagine the fear of not knowing if

you will ever see your mommy or daddy again. We have no way of knowing the future harm and

potential hostility we could be inflicting in these children. Anyone who has heard the audio of the

young child crying out for her mother and father knows that this policy is contrary to what the

United States of America stands for. With that in mind, I ask the Mayor and Council to pass a

Resolution on behalf of the South Plainfield community strongly requesting that our New Jersey

Congressional delegation and Senators Menendez and Booker pass legislation to end this

repugnant practice and reunite the families already separated. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said,

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Let our community be the one that speaks

up and stands for justice for these families. My running mates Kristine Keefe, Sherri Zwerko and

I are forwarding this request to the borough clerk and we ask all residents to come to the

Council meeting on July 9th to show your support for a resolution.

Very truly yours,

Sandy Doyon

Candidate for Mayor
