Middlesex County offers plenty of fun and free local activities for the winter months. And when the worst of the season’s weather does hit, our Office of Public Works is there to clear the streets, making sure you and your family stay safe as you travel to work and school. Through rain, snow, and sleet, Middlesex County is there to assist you.

One very popular winter activity in Middlesex County is skating at the Roosevelt Park Family Ice Rink. The rink offers group and private lessons and is available for parties. For hours and more information, please visit www.middlesexcountynj.gov or call 732-494-2980.

Some other fun activities for winter in our County parks include photography, bird watching, snow-shoeing, sledding and cross-country skiing.

You may not think of Middlesex County as a skiing destination, but we do offer opportunities to ski right here. Go out to Farm Road Trail in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park (North Brunswick). Other great options include the open fields of Heathcote Meadows Preserve (South Brunswick) and the four-mile Heathcote-Mapleton Loop, which connects the Preserve to the Cook Natural Area, Mapleton Preserve, and Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park. Try also the flat open soccer fields at Thompson Park (Monroe Township). This is also a great area for birding. The Middlesex Greenway, stretching from Metuchen through Edison and into Woodbridge, is not plowed during the winter, providing a great cross-country skiing opportunity. Flat, snowy areas like this are also great for snow-shoeing, which is a fun and easy activity for all ages. Make sure you have the proper equipment before skiing or snow-shoeing.

Thompson Park in Monroe Township and Donaldson Park in Highland Park have dedicated sledding areas. These are the ONLY two parks and areas where sledding is permitted.

If you explore our County Parks this winter, remember these general safety tips:

  • Parks are open from dawn to dusk.
  • Always be aware of your own limitations and never make a trip or do an activity that is beyond your physical capabilities.
  • Wear warm, layered clothing: hat, scarf, gloves, sturdy boots and avoid hypothermia by staying dry and warm, drinking plenty of water, eating food, and resting often.
  • Always tell a friend where you will be going, when you expect to return, and make sure that you can stay in contact in the event of an emergency.

Whether you’re visiting a park or have an important trip to make, driving in winter weather can be hazardous. Always make sure your car has at least half a tank of gas in it during inclement weather. Remember to drive slowly and always leave extra time for turns and other maneuvers. Avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather. Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery or wet surface.

I hope that you have a fun and safe winter season, and that you are able to share it with those you love most.

May God bless you, and may God bless America!
