WILDWOOD, NJ – Luke Niemeyer and Anthony White, of South Plainfield, both took 1st place in their respective divisions, at the prestigious War At The Shore Wrestling Tournament. The event was wrestled over 2 days from March 25-26, 2016, at the Wildwood Convention Center, in Wildwood, New Jersey. The tournament is the largest open event individual tournament held in New Jersey annually (~1,500 total wrestlers) and attracts top rated NJ and out of state wrestlers from all regions of the country across all youth and high school division weight classes. The Mid Atlantic and Northeast regions of the country, in particular, are extremely well represented at the tournament. Brackets on average contain 32 or more wrestlers. It is a highly competitive event.
Luke Niemeyer defeated Ryan Hall, from Lenape, in the Intermediate Division 190 Pound Final, by fall (0:52), to win the division. Niemeyer was 4-0 versus quality competition for the weekend including 2 victories over out of state opponents. Niemeyer is currently a Freshman at South Plainfield High School. He is expected to return next season to a highly talented South Plainfield High School line-up, for his Sophomore campaign, as a member of Coach McCann’s team.
Anthony White defeated Nick Raspantini of Olympic by a 7-1 decision in the Junior Division 87 Pound Final, to win the division. White was 5-0 versus quality competition for the weekend including 3 victories over out of state opponents. White’s biggest challenge came in the semi-final round against 4-time New York State Champion, Troy Spratley, from the Gladiators Wrestling Club. White defeated Spratley by a 3-1 decision in a match featuring the current state champions from NJ and NY. White’s bracket had 32 wrestlers competing with representation from 8 states. White is currently a 7th Grader at South Plainfield Middle School. He is expected to return next season to a highly talented South Plainfield Middle School line-up, for his final 8th grade season, as member of Coach Gonzalez’s team.
Six other South Plainfield wrestlers also participated at the recent 2016 War At The Shore Tournament including: Chris Loniewski (Pee Wee – 51 Pound), Andrew Loniewski (Midget – 78 Pound), Justus Niemeyer (Midget – 83 Pound), Tommy Fierro (St. Benedicts High School – 101 Pound), Alex Amato (South Plainfield High School – 107 Pound); and, David Loniewski (Bishop Ahr High School – 114 Pound). All six of these wrestlers also performed very well in their respective divisions, with 2 or more victories each over the 2-day event. Several of these wrestlers came within 1 victory of placing in their divisions.
