EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Metuchen’s Sarah Jeney scored the lone goal of the game and South Plainfield was unable to convert on two penalty corners as time expired as the Metuchen Bulldogs went on to defeat South Plainfield 1-0 to capture the Greater Middlesex Conference Title.
The game was a hard fought seesaw battle with Metuchen and South Plainfield both getting their equal fill of offensive chances. Jeney’s goal off of a shot by teammate Emily Glutz was the difference maker.
“Our girls just played an awesome game today,” said Metuchen Head Coach Beth McLaughlin. “Things got a little nervous there at the end, but the girls gained their composure and got the win.”
It was a great win for Metuchen’s first year head coach, and the first GMCT title for Metuchen since McLaughlin played for the Bulldogs.
It was a nerve racking ending for both sides as South Plainfield swarmed the net as time expired only to be awarded consecutive penalty corners with 0.00 on the clock. A shot off the side of the net allowed Metuchen goalie Kamryn Chaudry to raise her arms signaling victory.
The loss was tough for the Lady Tigers who were looking to repeat as GMCT champions.
“Today was just a testament to the heart of these girls,” said South Plainfield Head Coach Melissa Zurawiecki. “All year we have preached about the need to play to the final minute and they played to the final second.”
