EDISON, NJ - Plays-in-the-Park located at Roosevelt Park in Edison, NJ is excited to announce its sensational summer season.

The season opens with Young Frankenstein, the Mel Brooks musical based on the 1974 comedic film. This re-imagining of the classic story of Frankenstein will leave you singing along and laughing in the aisles. Performances run from June 17 through June 27.

Our second show is the family-friendly musical, Oklahoma!, with performances from July 8 through July 18. This Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic sets the standards of musical theatre as it tells the romantic story of Curly and Laurey, a cowboy and farm girl.

Closing out the season will be Jesus Christ Superstar, the groundbreaking rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber that tells the events of Jesus’ last days through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. It will run from July 29 through Aug. 8.

All three of these summer productions are staged at the Stephen J. Capestro Amphitheater at
1 Pine Drive, Edison, NJ in the heart of Roosevelt Park.

“This looks to be another stellar season for Plays-in-the-Park,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I encourage everyone to attend these productions, not only to enjoy beautiful Roosevelt Park, but also to see and hear the remarkable contributions of so many talented actors, musicians, technicians and directors.”

Plays-in-the-Park represents a unique collaboration between community theater and the local government since 1963. PIP is sponsored by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Middlesex County Parks and Recreation Department. Plays-in-the-Park’s mission is to recreate the quality and intent of the original Broadway productions of these shows.

“Plays-in-the-Park is a County institution,” said Freeholder Charles E. Tomaro, Chairman of the County’s Infrastructure Management Committee. “Residents have looked forward to them for over 50 years, and many have grown up watching these shows.  Seeing the lawn chairs lined up outside the theater is always a sign that we are coming together as a community for a very special experience.  I wish the casts and the staff all the best for this new season.”

Tickets for these productions can only be purchased on the night of each performance. The Box Office opens at 5:30 p.m. on the evenings of performances and closes at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for seniors (60+). Children 12 and under are admitted for free.

This year, in recognition of their continuing service to our country, Plays-in-the-Park is proud to offer complimentary admission to its summer musicals for active U.S. Military Service members and their immediate families. There will be a select number of reserved seats available for each performance, so service members are asked to call the Parks Office at 732-745-3936 prior to the show they wish to attend. Proper ID is required when picking up tickets.

All shows begin at 8:30 p.m., excluding the performances of Oklahoma! on July 13 and 14, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. There are no performances on Sundays. Audience members must provide their own seating, or can rent lawn chairs from Friends of Plays-in-the-Park. All chair backs must not exceed 40 inches. Please refer to the County website, www.co.middlesex.nj.us(search Plays in the Park), for more information about the Box Office and seating.

If a performance is cancelled due to inclement weather, you may save your ticket and use it to attend any other summer PIP performance at no additional charge. Ticket stubs are valid up to one year after the canceled performance.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
