SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - On December 8, District 8 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary recognized students who were local winners in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy programs. The Patriot’s Pen is a scholarship essay contest for middle school students; Voice of Democracy is a speech competition for high school students. The theme for both competitions was: What Makes America Great.”

In South Plainfield, VFW Post 6763 asked SPMS teachers Joe Blondo and Barbara Pinelli to have students participate. Over 120 essays were written. The screening committee was Richard Doerr, Rod Endicott and Joe Vella. The winners were: Achuthan Menon, Ava Morne Felz, Myah Kovacs and Dylan Baksh. Each received a certificate for winning the local portion of the competition.

Post 6763 Commander Jake Martinez, who also was part of the honor guard at the ceremony, said, “This is a great program for students to express themselves. Participation in our democracy is a goal of the VFW.”
