SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Monroe Falcons scored five runs in the eighth inning, to beat back a ferocious South Plainfield Tiger comeback to go on to defeat South Plainfield 12-7. Monroe’s Kelly Widener pitched seven innings allowing just three runs and striking-out ten batters for the win.
Monroe scored three runs in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to build a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning.
South Plainfield’s Holly DeLair led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double. DeLair scored on Caroline Ratti’s RBI double. Senior Haley Hlavka's singled to put runners on the corners, and Shannon Hughes blasted a three run homerun to tie the game at 7-7.
In the eighth inning the Falcons started with a single by Kendra Barlotta. Casey Schieda walked, Cindy Foresta loaded the bases with a single to right and Sara McGrath drew a walk to score the go-ahead run. Margaux Petersen singled to knock in two more runs for the Falcons. The Falcons weren't done, however, Angela Mazurkiewicz then singled to knock in two more RBIs. South Plainfield was blanked in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game 12-7.
The victory improves Monroe’s record to 9-0, and South Plainfield falls to 8-3. South Plainfield’s Katherine Vill took the loss and is now 7-3 on the season.
