PISCATAWAY, NJ – Tayib Mahmood, 29, of Woodbridge was charged on Wednesday with causing the death of a passenger in his car, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Piscataway Police Chief Scott Cartmell.

The charges stem from a May 6 crash on Stelton Road when Mahmood, who was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry struck a concrete barrier near Jessie Way and the car caught on fire, said officials.

The victim, Tahir Jamile, 27, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Mahmood was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital with serious injuries and underwent immediate surgery, said police.

He was charged with second degree vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence in a school zone, reckless and careless driving, and failure to maintain lane, said police.

Mahmood is scheduled to appear in a New Brunswick court on June 12.
