PLAINFIELD, NJ - Plainfield shares a common four corner boundary with neighboring towns, one of the few in New Jersey.  Located on Woodland Avenue near Sprague Avenue, it is where north-south and east-west divide four towns and separate Middlesex and Union Counties.

Today, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp of Plainfield, Mayor Thomas Lankey of Edison, Mayor Al Smith of Scotch Plains, and Mayor Matthew P. Anesh of South Plainfield will come together for "X Marks the Spot" to recreate an historic photo appearing in the May 27, 1963 issue of the Plainfield Courier-News.  The original event paid tribute to the cooperation between the four municipalities, signifying a commitment to a partnership that the mayors of today plan to honor and perpetuate.

Plainfield’s Mayor Adrian O. Mapp notes, “I am excited to join with my fellow mayors to commemorate and recreate the historic photo and the commitment to cooperation and friendship that it symbolizes.”  He added, “Now more than ever it is essential that we work together and support one another in order to better serve our communities.  I look forward to marking this occasion and meeting to identify additional ways for our local governments to collaborate.”

Elected officials from the four municipalities, the two counties, and the state of New Jersey have been invited to the festivities.  The event starts at 12:00 pm.

The mayors in the original photo were John George of South Plainfield, Robert Maddox of Plainfield, Anthony Yelencsics of Edison, and Norman Lacombe of Scotch Plains.  According to the South Plainfield Historical Society Facebook page, the Scotch Plains engineer did the surveying, South Plainfield was responsible for the painting, the Plainfield Shade Tree Commission supplied a truck with an overhead bucket for the photographer, and Edison provided police protection.

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...
