SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – ProCare Physical Therapy opened its doors and began serving this community over 17 years ago. Since then, what started out as a husband and wife team has grown to be a family of professionals that have become a trusted and well respected staple in the community when it comes to getting residents back on their feet and feeling and functioning better.

Wanting to bring a physical therapy clinic to the community where patients are treated with a caring individualized touch in a atmosphere that is warm, inspiring and fun, Joe and Cathy Scarpitto opened their first office on New Brunswick Avenue on the border of Piscataway and South Plainfield in 1998. When the opportunity arose in 2012 to move their clinic into South Plainfield, the Scarpittos quickly relocated and opened their doors at 201 Durham Avenue. ProCare Physical Therapy also has a second location on North Bridge Street in Bridgewater, which has been delivering the same personalized treatment to that community for over five years.

“Our goal at ProCare Physical Therapy is to use our experience to make the right evaluations and precise treatments to relieve your pain and improve your function as fast as possible,” said Joe Scarpitto, PT, a lifelong resident of South Plainfield who has been treating patients since 1989.  “We invest all the time it takes to ensure your recovery.”

In addition to physical therapists Joe and Cathy Scarpitto, ProCare is staffed by experienced licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants well known to the community - Michelle Biggs, PT and Barbara Hoey Gonzalez, PTA in their South Plainfield Office and Alex Rodriguez, DPT, Priyanka Dave, DPT, Kathy Boniakowski, PTA and Angie Craig, PTA in their Bridgewater location.

Together as a team, they deliver personalized, caring one-on-one first-class care tailored to each patient’s specific needs. “We look to see what each patient’s goals are and what activities they would like to get back to – whether it be just getting up and out of the house or getting back to a sport, job or recreational activities – and tailor their treatment to meet those goals.” said Cathy Scarpitto, PT, who has been treating patients for over 30 years. “Physical therapy is not a passive treatment. At ProCare, we believe that the patient is part of the team and their input ensures better results. In addition to just treating symptoms, we go one step further.”

She continued, “Patients are provided the knowledge to understand the cause of their symptoms and the tools to correct it in their daily activities so that they can prevent or control future episodes of pain or dysfunction. We want our patients to become independent in their care upon discharge.”

As related to the ProCare staff by patients who have received physical therapy elsewhere, ProCare’s philosophy, atmosphere and physical therapy care is different and better than what they have experienced in the past.

“From interactions with our office staff as well as our clinicians, our patients repeatedly tell us that they feel they are a part of a family, that their concerns are heard and addressed and they feel well cared for and supervised at all times,” according to Joe Scarpitto, PT. “Our friendly, upbeat and relaxed environment is conducive to healing and our patients enjoy coming so much that most never want to leave! We often see them again for other conditions and we are happy to be who they think of first when they need help.”

ProCare Physical Therapy specializes in orthopedics, sports medicine, back and neck injuries, industrial rehabilitation and pain management. Their experienced qualified staff treats many conditions such as acute and chronic neck and back pain, shoulder pain, rotator cuff injury, elbow pain, wrist and hand pain, hip, knee and foot and ankle pain as well as provide rehab following surgery to get their patients back into the ‘game.’ Additionally, ProCare offers injury prevention, screenings as well as Nutritional Counseling with Alyssa Cellini, nutritionist, in their Bridgewater location.

ProCare Physical Therapy treats patients of all ages – children through senior citizens – and the length of treatment is dependent on an individual’s injury or rehabilitation needs. Physical Therapy can help decrease the effects of the aging process and keep the senior population active and functioning safer and better. “The physical therapy staff at ProCare has made a difference in the lives of many of our cherished senior residents,” said Tree Olano, director of South Plainfield Senior Center.

ProCare accepts most major insurances as well as Medicare, No Fault and Worker’s Compensation. The office staff verifies insurance benefits ahead of time so there are no surprises and patients are well informed of their cost in advance. With the exception of Medicare, Workers Compensation and No Fault insurance, many patients are able to begin physical therapy without a doctor’s prescription. Call for an appointment and ProCare’s knowledgeable office staff will answer all your questions.

ProCare Physical Therapy of South Plainfield is located at 201 Durham Avenue and hours of operation are Monday and Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ProCare’s Bridgewater office is located at 475 North Bridge Street – Suite 102 and hours of operation are Monday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 1 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information, call the South Plainfield office at 908-205-8625, the Bridgewater office at 908.575.0008 or visit http://www.procarept.us.

“We love what we do and are passionate about what we do and I think that shows,” said Joe Scarpitto, PT, adding, “Choosing the right physical therapist DOES make a difference.”

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
