Governor Christie’s Administration is promoting Readiness for the Hurricane Season, but the suggestions are useful for all weather events we may experience. Technically the hurricane season runs from June 1st to the end of October, but we usually see the most severe weather in August and September.

To help residents with the process of preparation the State of New Jersey has made available a Hurricane Survival Guide.  The guide is available at There is also a checklist available as to how to prepare and maintain an emergency kit. The checklist is available at

The guide and the checklist have many helpful suggestions on how to secure your property, organize records, and have a supply of medication for several days.  As well as having enough food, water and cash on hand.

The aftermath of the event could be as devastating as the event if there is a loss of power; roads closed and constrained means of communication.  To help residents in these activities the South Plainfield Public Library will be presenting programs on Disaster Preparedness on Thursday, August 15th and August 29th at   7 p.m.

There is no preregistration requirement and there will be plenty of handouts for the residents who attend.  In ending we all need to remember the words of the Founding Father Benjamin Franklin: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
