SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield’s Roosevelt Elementary School recently held its annual Spring Concert. Members of the third and fourth grade band, chorus and orchestra performed for their fellow students during a special morning assembly May 23 and then welcomed back parents, friends and loved ones for a second show later that night.

“We’ve been presenting a spring concert for 29 years and every year is better than the last,” said Roosevelt’s Principal Robert Diehl. “Over the past several years, we have gotten more students involved in the music program and each year it seems that our chorus, band, orchestra gets bigger…”

“It’s always wonderful to see the students’ talents on display at the spring concert,” said Mary Malyska, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for South Plainfield Schools following the morning performance. “The growth they’ve demonstrated over the year is a great accomplishment.”

For 2017, the Roosevelt School Orchestra, under the direction of Bruce Mikolon, performed four selections, including a calypso number while the Roosevelt School Band, under the direction of Shannon Maddolin, performed four selections, including a Mozart melody. Additionally, members of the chorus, under the direction of Sharon Perez, sang five selections, including the Chinese folk song “Mo Li Hua” and “Aren’t You Glad You’re You,” which featured Diehl on guitar.

Maddolin serves as band director at the district’s four elementary schools and is also the chorus teacher at South Plainfield Middle School while Perez, who is celebrating her 28th year, serves as both music teacher and chorus director for Roosevelt School.

Additionally, for nearly three decades, Mikolon has served as orchestra director for both Roosevelt and Franklin Elementary schools as well as orchestra teacher at South Plainfield High School. He is set to retire, after 29 years, at the end of June.

“You never get tired of the teaching and that is what I enjoy; working with the students. That is why we do this,” said Mikolon, noting that in retirement he will continue to play the cello. “I’ve always played and I will continue to play.”

Diehl, who led the students and staff in a standing ovation for Mikolon following the orchestra's performance, added, “This is a special performance because Mr. Mikolon is retiring after 29 years and this will be his last spring concert with us. Additionally, Mrs. Perez has, for 28 years, been here teaching music. That’s a lot of students over the time.”

Congratulations to Roosevelt Elementary School’s band, chorus and orchestra students:
