PISCATAWAY, NJ - Chris Ash, a defensive coordinator with five years of Big Ten Conference coaching experience, has been named the new head coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football program.

Rutgers University Director of Athletics Patrick Hobbs made the announcement today after thanking President Robert Barchi and the Board of Trustees for also welcoming him to the university and described Ash as a man of commitment and integrity.

Ash comes to Rutgers with nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience, with four B1G Championships under his belt.

The 41-year old Ash currently serves as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at The Ohio State University and helped lead the Buckeyes to the 2014 national championship. While he will begin many of his duties at Rutgers immediately, he will remain on staff at Ohio State through the Buckeyes’ 2016 Fiesta Bowl game against Notre Dame on Jan. 1.

“Chris Ash is absolutely the right coach at the right time for Rutgers football,” Hobbs said. “He brings with him a national reputation for his coaching and recruiting abilities and, more importantly, for his character and leadership.  We could not be more excited to welcome Chris and his family to our Rutgers family.”

Ash began his coaching career in 1995 at Princeton University and is excited and thrilled to be the new football coach at Rutgers.

“I have been fortunate to learn the game of football from so many great coaches and mentors who have prepared me for this incredible opportunity,” said Ash. “There are so many wonderful things about Rutgers University and our state that we will build a program which can compete in a very difficult Big Ten Conference.  I want to thank President Barchi and Pat Hobbs for the opportunity of a lifetime.”

But he doesn’t want to compare himself to past coaches at Rutgers, such as Greg Schiano, whom Ash has gotten to know over the last few years.

“Chris Ash has a proven track record in the Big Ten and has earned the respect and praise of his student-athletes, his colleagues and his opponents,” said President Barchi.

“He is committed to excellence on the playing field and in the classroom, and he is a disciplined, detailed and focused leader, I am thrilled that Chris will lead our football program as we begin a new chapter in our athletics’ history,” Barchi said.

Ash’s goals include building a program that keeps New Jersey’s best football talent at home in the state, and on the Scarlet Knights team.

“I want to build a first-class program at the university and for the state so the people that live here and support us, are happy and proud to say they are part of the Rutgers football program,” said Ash.

“And I just want to make sure that we're better every single day, we're moving in the right direction; that the organization is aligned, we've got the right culture in place, we're recruiting the right type of people, hiring the right type of staff. And at the end of the day, the wins and the rankings and Bowl games and all of the things that fans want will be there.”

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.
