SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Scotch Plains’ Stav Shadmi scored the game winning goal approximately three minutes into overtime to lift Scotch Plains to a thrilling 3-2 victory over South Plainfield. The seesaw game looked like it would end in regulation, but South Plainfield’s Richard Marcovecchio scored on a header to knot the game 2-2 in the final minute of play to send the game into OT.

“I was hoping to get in the right space,” said Shadmi when discussing his game winning goal. “I knew the ball was going to be crossing from Ari, and I just headed it home.” Shadmi was right. He got a perfect feed from teammate Ari Rosenzweig to head in the game winner.

The game was a spirited one with Scotch Plains scoring first to take a 1-0 early in the first half. South Plainfield tied the game late in the first half with South Plainfield Senior Nick Polizzano scoring on s sleek header to knot things up at 1-1.

Scotch Plains retook the lead early in the second half when Rosenzweig converted on a penalty kick to put the Raiders up 2-1.

Rosenweig’s goal looked like it would hold up until Marcovecchio’s goal in the final minute. “I was trying my best to help out the team and put it in the back of the net,” said Marcovecchio. “I really wanted it. Jacob Villacres threw it in, Polizzano flipped it, and I was just there at the right time.”

“This is a pretty resilient group,” said Scotch Plains Head Coach Breznitsky. “We played some very good soccer, and the group found a way to come back and win.”

“Early in the season when we played the good teams and gave up an early goal we would our heads down and it would be a rout,” said South Plainfield Head Coach Anthony Perfilio. “Now our veterans are believing in our younger guys, and the younger guys believe they can win.”

Anyone that spent this cold, damp Saturday watching Scotch Plains and South Plainfield Boys Soccer was treated to a great soccer game from two winning programs.
