Our hometown Senator Patrick Diegnan sends his congratulations to South Plainfield seniors Kaylee Basantes-Lllerena, Liesl Co, Adrian Dominguez, Rafael Estrella, Julianne Ferraro, Nicole Freire, Jessica LaCross, Nicole Lujan, Gabriel Mont, Skylar Negron, Monica Paiz-Che, Saulio Quinchia, and Kevin Veliz for being awarded the State Seal of Biliteracy. The State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more world languages in addition to English. The legislation creating the seal of Biliteracy was sponsored by then Assemblyman Diegnan back in 2015 and was cosponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin. The State seal was established to encourage students to study languages and promote foreign language instruction in public schools.
The bill helps to prepare students with 21st century skills; and affirm the value of diversity and honors multiple cultures.
“We live in a worldwide economy. The ability to speak a second language is invaluable to employers. In addition, New Jersey is the most diverse state in the nation. Providing students the tools to speak another language is something our schools should be rightfully proud of.” The official Seal of Biliteracy will be included on each of recipients of the award student transcripts. “ Congratulations! You have made your teachers and your community very proud” Diegnan said.
