SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – It all started with a decision and a phone call.

In February 2016, after their pastor resigned, the members of Park Community Church decided to start seeking a congregation to merge with. The very next day, Pastor Robert Nieves of New Walk Church, a start up church that had been operating out of the Middlesex Elks Lodge for several years, reached out to a Park Community member to inquire about renting the South Plainfield church building.

“Our church community was beginning to grow and we were looking for a building that would facilitate a more worshipful environment,” said Pastor Nieves.

Three months and dozens of meetings and conversations later, the members of both churches gathered on Easter Sunday for their first joint service. Over the months that followed, plans were ironed out to merger the congregations with New Walk Church operating out of 3121 Park Avenue in South Plainfield. On Jan. 22, the merger will be celebrated with a Re-Launch Service and Luncheon. Members of the community are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. worship service featuring Pastor Carlos Medina of Elohim Christian Church in New York City as the guest speaker.

“Pastor Carlos has been a personal mentor and supporter of our ministry throughout the years,” said Pastor Nieves. “We will celebrate God’s faithfulness to both congregations. It is obvious to us that this union has been orchestrated by his hand.”

Over 100 years ago, a small group of Swedish immigrants gathered together in Plainfield with the desire to plant a church and have an impact on their community. Thus became Park Community Church.

Pastor Nieves began his path as a minister at Elohim Church in New York City 20 years ago and, in 2002, his journey brought him to Evangel Chapel in Bridgewater where he worked as a youth/worship minister. From there, Pastor Nieves went to the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Missouri. In 2011, Pastor Nieves, along with his wife, Lisa, and their five children, relocated to Neshanic Station and that October began New Walk Church in Dunellen.  They later relocated to South Plainfield in 2013.

“It’s been wonderful to see not only our congregations come together, but also new faces join in as a result,” said Pastor Nieves, adding, “This merger is greater than bringing together two worshipping communities. It's about reconciling our community back to its creator.”
