SOMERVILLE, NJ – Gallery on Main, an eclectic showcase of antiques, collectibles and one-of-a-kind artwork will kick off its Artist-of-the-Month series this week, featuring Hunterdon County artist Karina Jimenez.

A recent graduate of Raritan Valley Community College, the young artist works in a variety of mediums – graphite pencil and charcoal, acrylics, gouache, oil and clay to execute her drawings, paintings and sculpture. She also specializes in special effects makeup, and has several film and video projects to her credit.

Gallery owners Shaun Daley and Michelle Mundt will host a reception with Jimenez open to the public at the gallery Friday, Feb. 3, from 6-9 p.m.

Daley and Mundt issued a call for artists several months ago, and selected Jimenez to open the gallery series over dozens of other artists and photographers.

“She’s a young artist, very talented and we really liked the colors and the imagination that went into her work,” Daley said. “We thought she would be a good fit as our kickoff artist.”

Her visual arts career began to flourish while she was a student at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, and continued during her two years at RVCC where she majored in Visual Arts, graduating with honors.

Beginning with her classroom sketching assignments to eventually displaying her artwork in a museum, her passion for different kinds of art continues to expand.

Inspired by the dark and witty mind of Tim Burton, the stories in J.K Rowling's magical head, and what seems to be mostly nature, Karina has has conjured a whimsical portfolio in color and black-and-white.

Daley said the gallery has booked artists and photographers to exhibit each month through the end of the year, and will issue another call for artists in the fall. Artists are also encouraged to stop in the gallery at any time with their portfolio, Daley said.

“Our Intentions from the beginning have been to give local artists a platform to show off their work,” Daley said.

Upcoming will be  a variety of mixed-media art, sculpture, paintings and drawings, according to Daley.

Gallery on Main, located at 30 West Main St., is the only permanent gallery space in the borough.

Arts on Division, a non-profit organization that promotes the arts and other community-based activities in the borough, hosts several art shows outdoors and in other spaces during the year.

Gallery on Main also specializes in photo restorations and framing.
