SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - South Plainfield 10U White All-Star Team ended their season on Sunday August 2nd in another record breaking win by capturing the Summer Slam Tournament win on home turf at Ponytail Park.
It was the tournament to win for the Tigers who spent their season defeating the top teams of New Jersey, but were now determined to win a championship trophy on their home field in single elimination finals. The Tigers started the day early, facing off against Montgomery. The game was a pitcher’s duel between Tigers Grace Colucci and Montgomery, of which neither pitcher was backing down. Montgomery scored first leaving the Tigers eager to catch up. With bases loaded at the bottom of the 5th inning, Gianna Parlapiano forced a walk and the game was tied. Montgomery retaliated and at the top of the 6th inning they were ahead 2-1 with the bases loaded. Nonetheless, there was no rally, because Bridgette Feeney caught a high line drive that was heading for the fences, ending the inning in sensational fashion. The Tigers now needed 1 run to tie and 2 runs to win the game. With 2 outs down, Sara McNelly cracked a single, landing her on 1st. Next at bat was Sara Orlowski, who smashed a picture perfect single, securing her on 1st and McNelly on 2nd base. It was up to slugger, Tori Ferguson, to save the game. And it was Tori who stole victory from the jaws of the defeat with a beautiful triple, ending the game 3-2 and sending a very shocked Montgomery team home.
The Tigers next faced top-seed Bayonne Fury in the semi-finals under the blistering mid-afternoon sun. But, the Fury lost confidence early, as Tiger Tori Ferguson hit yet another homerun in the 1st inning. The game was owned by the Tigers. RBI’s were earned by Tori Ferguson, Natalie Rivera, Emily Cortes and the debilitating triple by Grace Colucci sealed the deal. Pitcher Tori Ferguson nailed a near perfect game and the Tigers locked in another win, sending overpowered Bayonne home and securing a spot in the finals.
In the Finals, South Plainfield came out swinging and the South Brunswick Vikings did their best to hold on. Every Tiger player made it onto a base, if not home at least once. The maximum 5 run mercy rule was implemented in the 3rd and 4th inning. Pitcher Grace Colucci struck out 11 of her 14 batters. Not a single Viking made it to 2nd base. The game and season ended with a line drive single by Alexandra Gibson, sending in the last run preventing the game to continue.
