South Plainfield Boys Basketball Stuns Spotswood, 50-45

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -  South Plainfield’s Chris Mathis scored 23 points, and the South Plainfield Tigers held off a late fourth-quarter surge to defeat the Spotswood Chargers, 50-45, in an opening night Blue Division boys basketball matchup.

The Tigers took a two-point lead midway through the first quarter and they would never trail the Chargers for the rest of the game. South Plainfield led Spotswood, 22-18, at the half, and never led Spotswood by more than seven points in the tightly played contest.

In addition to pumping in 23 points, Mathis led all players with seven rebounds.  South Plainfield guard Roemello Monroe chipped in eight points, and controlled much of the offense for the Tigers.

South Plainfield led Spotswood 34-27 to start the fourth quarter.  Spotswood’s Jake Dadika brought the Chargers within two points with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.  Dadika would lead all Chargers with 13 points.  South Plainfield would ice the game in the fourth quarter with twelve free throws, and Mathis’ 13 fourth quarter points.
