MADISON, NJ - The South Plainfield boys’ 5th grade travel basketball team won the Jersey Basketball Association Blue division championship this past Sunday. The team of Brandon Dean, Jack Adkins, Jonathan Lujan, Zachary Robinson, Al Fuschetti, Keagan Edmondson, Colin Droge, Steven Moench, Ashton Donovan, Frankie Flannery, and Michael Mendez finished the regular season tied for second with a 12-2 record. The South Plainfield boys faced a Green Brook team that had only one loss on the season and that loss was to South Plainfield.
In the championship game the South Plainfield boys came out hot and never stopped. They took a 24 point lead at the half and extended it to as much as 31 points. Green Brook went on a mini-run late, but never was able to cut the deficit below 20 points. The South Plainfield boys used a clamp down defense to defeat Green Brook 60-32. The Leading scorers for South Plainfield were Brandon Dean with 16 points and Michael Mendez with 15 points. The team is coached by head coach Jay Edmondson, and assistant coaches Bob Moench and Larry Droge. The coaches said they could not be prouder of the boys. They worked hard all season for redemption for last year’s loss to Westfield in the finals.
