SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Police Department will soon be able to strengthen its canine unit thanks to a generous donation from the Elks.

At the June 18 council meeting, members of the South Plainfield Elks #2298 presented Captain Matt Koep with a check for $5,000. The monies, according to Chief James Parker, will go to supplement the department’s canine unit.

“This donation will be dedicated to our canine unit for obtaining another canine in the future,” said Parker, adding, “I want to thank the South Plainfield Elks for their generous contribution and support for the South Plainfield Police Department.”

“The South Plainfield Police Department is a big part of our community and we are happy to help them help keep our community safe and make South Plainfield a better place,” Pete Smith, a member of the South Plainfield lodge and past president of the New Jersey State Elks Association, told TAPinto South Plainfield.

The South Plainfield Elks – along with Elks throughout the country and the state – are dedicated to helping those in need and, unlike other fraternal organizations, are not dedicated to one specific cause or group. Instead the Elks, a 501(c)(8) not-for-profit, dedicate their services and financial resources to help a variety of organizations and individuals, including but not limited to, special needs children, college scholarships, youth projects and recreational programs for veteran’s hospital patients.

“We are dedicated to helping organizations and individuals in the community and encourage others to join and be a part,” said Smith. “We do so many thing and our community is our heart. If we can help the community in any way, whether it is the police, the fire, rescue, the high school, our students – this is what we are all about.”

The Elks raise funding for donations such as the one to the police department through various lodge events, including breakfasts, dinners, and more. “We are grateful that the community comes out and supports us and our fundraising efforts,” said Smith, adding, “With their support, we are able to do these things and give back to the community.”

South Plainfield Elks #2298 is located at 1254 New Market Avenue. New members are always welcome. “As a community-based organization we like to consider ourselves a premier charitable organization in the community and would really love for you to join us…” Smith told those gathered at Monday's meeting. “We welcome you to come down and see all we do….We have the greatest people on earth.”
