SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield girls soccer team defeated Sayreville, 2-1, in the preliminary round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Wednesday in South Plainfield.
Freshman Caity Hughes got South Plainfield on the board first with a goal less than 15 minutes into the first half. Michaella Butrico scored at the 15-minute mark of the second half to put South Plainfield up, 2-0. Butrico’s goal would turn out to be more than insurance because Sayreville’s Kim Stratton scored with five minutes left in the game to bring Sayreville within one goal.
South Plainfield’s Claire Nagel had an assist for South Plainfield to round out South Plainfield’s offensive statistics. Sydni Suroweic had six saves in goal for South Plainfield in a winning effort, and Sayreville’s Kelly Raub had four saves in a losing effort. The victory brings South Plainfield’s girls soccer team back to the .500 mark with an 8-8-1 record.
