SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield’s 60th Annual Labor Day Parade was held on Sept. 4 with crowds of all ages gathering along the route. The theme of this year’s parade was ‘Happy 60th Birthday South Plainfield Labor Day Parade.’
“Today, is the 60th birthday of the Labor Day Parade and was one of the best parades ever as stated by many participants,” said Debbie Boyle, chair of the borough’s Public Celebrations Committee. “It was a wonderful turnout of vendors and local organizations. The weather was sent from above to mark this great 60th birthday celebration.”
The Borough of South Plainfield’s annual Labor Day celebration kicked off at 9 a.m. Monday morning with the 27th Annual 5K Race and 1.5-Mile Family Fun Fitness Walk with 275 residents of all ages taking part.
At 10 a.m., the 60th Annual Labor Day Parade, led by the South Plainfield High School Marching Band and 2017 Grand Marshal Calvin Gross, stepped off from the PAL Recreation Building and headed up Maple Avenue before turning right onto Plainfield Avenue and concluding at the reviewing stand set up in front of South Plainfield Middle School (SPMS).
Participants included borough police, fire and EMS; school groups; athletic organizations; active and retired military; church groups; civic, fraternal, and community organizations; Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; local businesses; and dozens of elected officials representing the Borough of South Plainfield, Middlesex County, and State of New Jersey. Additionally, the Democratic and Republican candidates vying for governor, assembly, senate, and council also took part as did the Middlesex County sheriff and clerk.
The Public Celebrations Committee presented a plaque to the Rohrer family in honor of their late husband and father, Gary, who passed away in December and, as in previous years, trophies were awarded to the groups/individuals whose floats best depicted this year’s parade theme. The winners for 2017 were: Grand Marshal Trophy - South Plainfield Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts; Best Theme Trophy - South Plainfield Girl Scouts; Best Youth Trophy - South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club/Investor’s Bank; Best Band Trophy - Living Hope Church; Best Antique Vehicle Trophy - (Tie) Ben Deutschman/1960 Plymouth Savoy and a Car Nutz Car Club light blue convertible Mustang; and the 'George and Marie Page' Trophy - Holy Savior Academy.
Following the parade, residents gathered at the middle school for the borough’s annual community picnic featuring food, vendors and local business displays as well as games and free activities for children, including a music from AMP’d, a giant funhouse and slide.
