NEW BRUNSWICK - The South Plainfield High School girls varsity basketball team earned their first win of the 2016-17 season Tuesday evening, topping fellow Greater Middlesex Conference White Division foe, New Brunswick, 40-31 in New Brunswick.

The Tigers led 26-24 after three quarters, but Aniyah Thomas, who had a game-high 16 points for New Brunswick, converted a three-point play early in the fourth to put the Zebras up 31-28. However, South Plainfield outscored New Brunswick 14-7 in the final stanza and ended the game on a 12-0 run for the victory.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but I was really proud of the way we ended,” South Plainfield head coach Kevin Hughes told TAPinto.net. “We played good enough in the last six minutes to overcome the sloppy first 26.”
