SOMERVILLE, NJ – Patrick M. Monahan of South Plainfield was indicted in Somerset County Superior Court on charges of unlawful possession of a handgun and certain persons not to possess a handgun. Both charges are second-degree offenses. Monahan was indicted after admitted to accidently shooting himself in the foot while camping in the woods in Piscataway on Sept. 11.
According to Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano and Green Brook Township Chief of Police Christopher Kurz at approximately 8:22 a.m. on Sept. 11, the Green Brook Township Police Department responded to a medical care facility located on Route 22 on a report of a male, later identified as Monahan, who was seeking medical treatment for a gunshot wound to his right foot. Responding Green Brook patrol officers made contact with defendant Monahan, who indicated to officers that he accidentally shot himself in the foot while camping in a wooded area in Piscataway.
Monahan also informed officers that the weapon he utilized was in his vehicle which was parked in the parking lot of the medical facility. Monahan was transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for further medical treatment.
Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s office obtained a Superior Court Ordered Search Warrant for Monahan’s vehicle. The search resulted in the seizure of a loaded Para 1911 .45 caliber pistol along with two loaded magazines, two ballistic vests and a pair of handcuffs. Detectives have ascertained that defendant Monahan did not possess a New Jersey Firearms Identification Card nor was he employed in any law enforcement capacity.
Bail for defendant Monahan has been set at $75,000.
