South Plainfield Middle School Inducts 23 into Junior National Honor Society

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Family and friends, along with school administrators and board of education members, gathered Feb. 27 for South Plainfield Middle School’s (SPMS) annual National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony. For 2017-2018, 23 students were officially inducted into the nearly 90-year-old organization.

“It is a true privilege for me to work with these students…” said South Plainfield Middle School Principal Roger Vroom. “We are proud of the accomplishments of our students here today and hope new members will serve as role models for other students today, tomorrow, and for the years to come.”

The NJHS recognizes outstanding middle level students and serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

“We proclaim to all in attendance that membership in the South Plainfield National Junior Honor Society has been achieved by these candidates with the effective demonstration of the five qualities that serve as the standards of the National Junior Honor Society,” said Vroom.

To be eligible for induction, a middle school students must also maintain a 90-percent overall average, be enrolled in 3 out of 4 honors classes, and submit an application detailing their community service and other outside activities.

On Tuesday evening, David Amador, a 2016-2017 NJHS inductee, led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a performance of the National Anthem by Alyssa Rivera (a 2016-2017 inductee) and Mary Lee O’Dell (a 2017-2018 inductee). Additionally, current members and SPMS eighth graders Alyssa Jacome (president), Amy Swartz (vice president), Olivia Glynn (treasurer), Aayush Agnihotri, and Christopher Spadavecchia described the different qualities NJHS stands for.

The new inductees then joined together to recite the official NJHS Pledge and then each student was called to light a candle and sign their name in the official South Plainfield High School NJHS registry.

The 2017-2018 NJHS inductees include Sarai Adams, Sidra Al-Ktaish, Tyler Balent, Emma Ballinger, Ashley Bloodgood, Grace Colucci, Keya Desai, Brady Farrell, Bridget Feeney, Alexandra Gibson, Gabrielle Green, Andrew Loniewski, Aiden Medina, Krupa Mistry, Sandra Morris, Kelsie Neidenbach, Thomas O’Brien, Marylee O’Dell, Angelina Resal, Jenna Sacco, Jordan Sacco, Adnan Yonathan, and Matthew Zeifallah. They were selected by a South Plainfield Middle School NJHS Faculty Council, which includes Christine Brandenburg, Marilyn Carney, Marianne Decker, Anna Kousoulis, Donna Tierney, and Elizabeth Veiss.

The new inductees join current SPMS eighth graders and NJHS members Aayush Agnihotri, David Amador, Gillian Elizabeth Delacruz, Olivia Glynn, Anna Gnapp, Brianna Harris, Rebecca Hollo-Fitzharris, Alyssa Jacome, Kelcy McCoy, Alyssa Rivera,

Christopher Spadavecchia, Amy Swartz, Steven Twist, Gabriella Vitabile, and Katie Ziga.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) officially established NJHS in 1929, eight years after it founded the National Honor Society for high school students. The first chapter of NJHS at South Plainfield Middle School began in 1964 and, following a brief hiatus, the chapter was reinstated in 2016.

“Today’s ceremony indicates the continued emphasis on excellence that represents our school and community,” said Vroom.
