Hamilton Township Township, NJ- On March 30, seven South Plainfield Middle School students had the opportunity to perform with the Central Jersey Music Educators Honors Band.  Many students were nominated to participate in the event and seven were selected from South Plainfield.  The students who participated were: Madelynn Pfeiffer on flute, Denise Bui on clarinet, Laura Ladino-Furque on bass clarinet, Isabelle Goncalves on trumpet, Avery Cassio on trombone, Georgia Fraser on euphonium, and Domonique Sharpe on percussion.

After the students were nominated, they were given three challenging pieces for them to learn on their own.  Students had only three rehearsals in school prior to the event.  On concert day, students arrived at 9:00am in the morning for a full day of rehearsal.  The groups were separated into two ensembles: The Grey Band and the Black Band.  The Black Band was conducted by John Hylkema from Readington Middle School and the Grey Band was conducted by John Scozzaro from the Edison Middle School in Westfield.  Students rehearsed intensely for four hours and performed a concert at 2:00pm.

According to Mr. Veiss, the Middle School Band Director, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn from another teacher.  The best way to grow as a musician is to play under many different conductors.”  Mr. Veiss and the entire school community is proud of the efforts of these students and he is looking forward to them doing great things in their future musical careers!
