MONROE, NJ - The South Plainfield varsity softball team picked up a huge 6-3 victory over fellow Greater Middlesex Conference White Division foe Monroe Wednesday afternoon in Monroe.
The Lady Tigers and Falcons shared the GMC White crown a year ago, and this time, South Plainfield gets a little leg up in the early going.
While Carteret is in first place in the division with a 4-0 conference record and 5-0 overall, Monroe is right behind at 4-1 and South Plainfield is 3-1 against divisional opponents.
Nonetheless, this is a big win for the Tigers as Monroe was previously undefeated.
“We played a super game today beating a good team in Monroe,” South Plainfield head coach Don Panzarella told TAPinto South Plainfield. “[We played] great defense (and) our offense battled all day.”
South Plainfield jumped on the board early taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jennifer Grasso singled and scored Jill Holoboski.
The Tigers scored again in the second inning on an RBI single by Meghan Hughes that scored Nina Vick after she singled, moved to second base into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, and Caity Hughes singled to move her to third.
The quick 2-0 lead was short lived however as the Falcons mustered across a run in the bottom of the second inning on a bases loaded walk. Monroe would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of third. Sarah McGrath poked a double and Gracie Martini powered a home run over the left field fence to give the Falcons a 3-2 advantage.
The Tigers battled back as Makayla Sosa singled up the middle and Caity Hughes doubled to move her over to third and Meghan Hughes again came through with a sac fly to score Sosa. The Hughes sisters finished a combined 4-for-9 and three RBIs on the day. Then, after the sacrifice fly, Holoboski, who went 2-for-4, hit an RBI double to score Caity Hughes to put the Lady Tigers up 4-3.
South Plainfield tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning and outhit Monroe 15-9.
Katherine Vill (4-1) pitched once again for the Lady Tigers, going the distance for her and her team’s fourth win of the season.
TAPinto South Plainfield will be there live to cover the Lady Tigers next home game this Friday against GMC White challenger John F. Kennedy (Iselin Kennedy) at 4:00 p.m.
