SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The curtain on South Plainfield Summer Drama Workshop’s (SPSDW) 2017 production, The Drowsy Chaperone, will go up later this week. Performances of the Tony award-winning ‘musical within a comedy’ will be held Thursday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 6 at in the air-conditioned South Plainfield High School auditorium.

The Drowsy Chaperone focuses on a tired chaperone who puts on his favorite recording of a musical and it comes to life on stage. The two-act play features a host of characters including but not limited to, a couple on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theater producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and a tipsy chaperone. The show is age-appropriate for all audiences and features both new and returning cast members, staff, musicians, and crew, including Megan Garretson making her SPSDW debut as 'The Drowsey Chaperone.'

“SPSDW is a South Plainfield tradition, 46 years strong, that brings the opportunity for our kids, starting in sixth grade, to be a part of a professionally run musical theatre,” said SPSDW President Will Mott.

Initially established to keep kids engaged during the summer, SPSDW has, since 1972, put on dozens of sell-out plays and musicals.  The tuition-based program, which today is run under the auspices of the South Plainfield Adult School, is volunteer-run and staffed by seasoned professionals dedicated to uncovering one’s hidden talents while, at the same time, building confidence and teaching teamwork and responsibility.

Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students for all shows. Performances will held Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 3-5, at 7 p.m. and at 2 p.m. in Sunday, Aug. 6. Tickets can be purchased at the box office prior to each performance. For additional information, visit https://www.facebook.com/SouthPlainfieldSummerDramaWorkshop/
