SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - South Plainfield’s Junior Midget (JM) Cheer squad competed at the Pop Warner Eastern Region Championships on Saturday November 7th.  The team of 32 girls went up against tough competition from the other teams in their division.  But the Tigers turned in a great performance filled with energy, precision and a high level of difficulty.   This is the first time since 2009 that a South Plainfield Pop Warner cheer squad has taken 1st place at the Eastern Region Championships.  Only the top two teams in each division are eligible to advance to the National level competition in December.  The JM Tigers were also Conference Champions when they took 1st place at the Jersey Valley Conference Competition in October.

According to Head Coach Amy Fonti, “These girls worked so hard since the Conference Competition to improve their skills.  They knew they each had to give 110% if they were going to win this and have a chance to advance, and they outdid themselves.  It was one of their best performances yet this season, and they are in a good place as they start to train for Nationals.  The coaches and everyone that’s a part of South Plainfield Pop Warner are so proud of each and every one of them!”

At Nationals the Tigers will compete against up to 15 other teams for the coveted title of National Champion.  Only 3 other teams in South Plainfield history have earned the title of National Champion, in 2008, 2010 and 2014.  This year’s cheer squad will be the 9th team from South Plainfield to compete at the National Pop Warner Cheer Championships.
