SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Junior right-hander Vincent Pellegrino scattered six hits and allowed just two runs over five innings to lead South Plainfield to a 10-6 victory over Westfield on Friday.  The Tigers pounded out nine hits and took advantage of sloppy fielding to take a 10-1 lead at the end of four innings of play.  Westfield scored four runs in the sixth inning, but the rally fell short, and South Plainfield held on to win 10-6.

Westfield looked like it would score first in the game, loading the bases with nobody out in the second inning, but Pellegrino would get a strike-out, and Westfield’s Dan DoCampo would ground sharply into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.  South Plainfield would scratch out two runs in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Robert Eggert led off the inning with a walk.  Junior Bryan Gillen singled, senior Mike Polizzano sacrificed both runners over, and Eggert and Gillen would score on an error and a sacrifice fly.

Westfield would get on the board in the third inning when Anthony Perconte, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on Mike Ionta’s fielders-choice.

South Plainfield would erupt for five runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Senior Aidan McDermott would lead off the inning with a double.  Catcher Justin Marks was hit by a pitch.  Junior Chris Graves reached safely on a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error that would score McDermott.  Gillen scored Marks on a suicide squeeze.  With two outs, senior Mike Polizzano would line a single to score Graves.  Next, first-baseman LJ Scarpitto would single to right-center, and Polizzano, who was running from first with two outs, came all the way around to score on the play.  Junior Kyle Dickerson then tripled to score Scarpitto.

In the fourth inning McDermott once again would get the Tiger offense churning.  McDermott, Marks and Graves would each single and score in the inning.  The Tigers would chase starter Mike Androconis.  Westfield would score four runs in the sixth, but the rally would fall short, and Tigers Sophomore Nick Polizzano would throw a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the save.
