SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield’s 59th annual Labor Day Parade – one of the oldest and best-attended in the state – will take place on Monday, Sept. 5. The theme of this year’s parade, in conjunction with the borough’s 90th birthday, is "90 Years of Red Carpet - Movies, Music, Theater."

The day's festivities will begin with the 26th annual 5K Race and 1.5-mile Family Fun Fitness Walk. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. on Lake Avenue next to the middle school, with the race/walk starting at 9:30 a.m. Trophies will be awarded when all participants have completed the course.

Roads near the PAL and along the parade route will be closed at approximately 9 a.m., with the parade stepping off at 10 a.m. from the Police Athletic League building (PAL). This year’s parade will be led by the South Plainfield High School Marching Band along with 2016’s honorary grand marshals Georgeann Cochrane and Dominic Demico, Sr.

The route is as follows: Maple Avenue to Plainfield Avenue – past Borough Hall where announcers William ‘Bill’ Cochrane and Al Czech will be stationed. The parade will then bear right at 7-Eleven, at the reviewing stand in front of South Plainfield Middle School.

As in previous years, the parade judges will be stationed at the reviewing stand on the corner of Plainfield Avenue and Lake Avenue in front of South Plainfield Middle School. The judges will award trophies to the grand marshals as well as to floats that best depict this year’s theme and for ‘best band,’ ‘best antique car,’ ‘best school float,’ ‘honorary grand marshal,’ and ‘George and Marie Page.’ This year’s judges are Tony Massaro, Rick McCriskin, James Gustafson, Robert Long, Calvin Gross, Shannon Jefferys, Tom Lanza, and Cheryl Nagel-Smiley.

Immediately following the parade the annual community picnic will take place on the grounds of South Plainfield Middle School. There will be live entertainment, food, vendors and local business displays as well as games and free activities for children, including a funhouse and slide. All food vendors who intend to cook must obtain fire department permits before Sept. 5; vendors without the proper permits will be prohibited. Additionally, Litter-Free South Plainfield announcements and litter bags, sponsored by the South Plainfield Environmental Commission Clean Communities Advisory Board, including banners, flyers and litter bags, will be located throughout the Middle School lawn festivities.

South Plainfield’s Labor Day festivities will conclude on Monday evening at Spring Lake Park. Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be live music from Amp’d and vendors offering food and light-up items for purchase. Free glow necklaces will be distributed while supplies last. Roads will be closed at 8:15 p.m. with the fireworks show presented by Pyrotecnico scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m.

Please note, due to the festivities, South Plainfield School will operate on a delayed opened Tuesday, Sept. 6.
