SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Registration is currently under way for Camp Invention, which will take place this July for the third consecutive year at South Plainfield’s Riley Elementary School. The ‘hands on’ camp, open to students entering kindergarten through sixth grade in the fall, will run Monday, July 24 through Friday, July 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Camp Invention focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), 21st century skills, collaboration and problem solving. The theme for 2017 is ‘Launch’ and, over the course of five days, students will work in teams and rotate between four thematic classes – Duct Tape Billionaire, Have a Blast, Mission Space Makers, and Operation Keep Out – designed by Camp Invention’s research team.
“Throughout the week, students learned skills that will help them in whatever career they pursue,” said South Plainfield’s Camp Invention Director and Riley teacher Janine Kupcho, noting that the camp teaches elementary age students to ‘think with an open mind and come up with ideas that are innovative and engaging.’
Created by the Ohio-based National Inventors Hall of Fame, Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized summer program focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention. According to campinvention.org, providing quality programming in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics is top priority and the unrivaled program presents essential STEM concepts through the most creative hands-on activities.
“Campers really get to exercise their creativity and use their imagination in ways they don't normally get to in the classroom,” said Kupcho. “The children don't even know they're learning."
South Plainfield’s Camp Invention 2017, under the direction of Kupcho, will be taught by certified South Plainfield teachers with assistance from South Plainfield High School students who will serve as leadership interns (counselors).
