PERTH AMBOY, NJ - Last Friday, just before the major snowstorm that brought over two-feet of snow hit New Jersey, the South Plainfield High School wrestling team thumped the Perth Amboy Panthers 61-12 in Perth Amboy.

NJ.com’s updated individual rankings list released today has Tiger Joe Heilmann as the No. 4-ranked 106-pound wrestler in the state. He didn’t disappoint as the sophomore pinned Joseph Pacheco at 1:54.

No. 7-ranked wrestler Zach DelVecchio at 220-pounds for South Plainfield didn’t wrestle, but Dion Pender (195 lbs.) wrestled above his weight in DelVecchio’s place at 220-pounds and earned a 5-1 decision over Jonathan Collazo.

The Tigers also went to work and got victories at 132-pounds (Joe Sacco pin at 53 seconds over D’Angelo Morales), 138-pounds (Kyle Bythell pin at 1:52 over Michael Lopez), 145-pounds (Jeff Plungis pin over Jamil Angeles at 1:28), a major decision for Daniel Hedden at 152-pounds over Adolfi Jimenez, and 182-pounds (Christian Gonzalez pin at 52 seconds over Joe Schenck).

South Plainfield also reeled in triumphs at 113-pounds, 160-pounds, 170-pounds, and 190-pounds due to forfeits.

After last week’s 55-15 victory over Edison, head coach Kevin McCann told me, “…we lost a couple close ones that we would have liked to win, but we got the job done and it gets us ready for this weekend coming up.”

The same can be said about this match after the Panthers snuck in three wins over the Tigers. Jose Caceres of Perth Amboy won by forfeit at 285-pounds, but Norberto Torres over Ryan Duhamel and Alexis Soriano over Jacob Painton each won by decision.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 19-2 and while the Panthers fall to 7-6.

Before the No. 9-ranked South Plainfield squad heads to Piscataway this weekend for the Greater Middlesex County Tournament with Bishop Ahr, Carteret, Sayreville, and Piscataway, the Tigers travel to Stanhope, N.J. to face Lenape Valley Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. meet.

*South Plainfield was scheduled to square-off with Bridgewater-Raritan, Southern, and Kingsway last Saturday, but the snowstorm cancelled those plans. The same goes with yesterday’s meet at South Brunswick. No announcements yet for makeups if any.
