South Plainfield High School wrestling standout Zach DelVecchio has been pulled out of this weekend's Region 4 tournament due to health reasons, a report from Mycentraljersey.com says.
According to the report, Delvecchio, the No. 13 ranked 220-pound wrestler in the country and No. 2 in the state by NJ.com, was diagnosed with mononucleosis and an enlarged spleen
Delvecchio was the favorite to win the 220-pound bracket and was a serious contender for an individual state title.
South Plainfield head coach Bill Pavlak told Mycentraljersey.com that DelVecchio had not been at the top of his game for the past few weeks.
The coach also added that the South Plainfield junior will not be allowed to physically exert himself for three weeks.
DelVecchio owns a 117-7 career record and was undefeated this season at 35-0. The junior placed fourth in the state tournament last year, and in seventh place during his freshman year.
The tournament's semifinal will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Union High School.
