MONROE, NJ – Greater Middlesex County field hockey powers, South Plainfield and Monroe play today in what most expect to be a preview of a GMC Final later this fall. The preview to some, may actually seem to be more of a sequel. The last time these two programs met was in last year’s GMC finals where Monroe defeated South Plainfield 1-0 to win the crown and end the Tigers two year reign as GMC Champs.
The Monroe Falcons once again, will be looking to cool off one of the Hughes sisters, but this time it is the youngest Hughes, Caity.
South Plainfield center-forward Caity Hughes comes into today’s contest scorching hot. She has scored nine goals in just the past two games. Early in the season she is one of the leading goal scorers in the State. This is not too shabby considering Caity Hughes didn’t start playing field hockey for the Tigers until last year.
South Plainfield and Monroe each sport a 3-0 record, and Monroe forward Grace Martini enters the game with two hat-tricks of her own for a total of six goals on the season.
The winner of today’s game will take a step forward in the seeding race, but the victor should not get too excited, there will be a couple more sequels this year before the dust settles on a future GMC champ.
