South Plainfield’s McDermott Signs with St. John's University

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield star center fielder Aidan McDermott signed a national letter of intent to play baseball next year for St. John's University.

The signing ceremony included his mother Janet McDermott, South Plainfield High School Principal Dr. James Pedersen, athletic director Al Czech, South Plainfield varsity baseball coach Anthony Guida, and JV coach Jim Darby. After McDermott finishes his senior year of high school, he hopes to be patrolling the Red Storm’s outfield at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.

Aidan McDermott in 2013 was named Varsity Most Valuable Player of the year with 43 hits and a .417 batting average. Over the summer, McDermott played throughout Georgia and Florida for the Syracuse Sports Zone. In Georgia, McDermott batted forth overall in a 17-and-under wood bat tournament that included more than 260 teams and nearly 4,000 players from throughout the country.

McDermott’s success on the diamond has not come easy. Just two years ago, McDermott was hospitalized with a Brodies abscess. The ailment would require seven knee surgeries and months of antibiotics and rehabilitation.  McDermott missed all of the 2011 season, but he never lost hope. McDermott said, "I knew I would play baseball again. I worked hard to get back into shape, and joined the swim team to get flexibility and strength in my legs.”

McDermott is third in a line of four successful student athletes. His oldest brother Dylan is a junior swimming at Carnegie Mellon University. Next is his older brother Liam, who is a freshman playing football for Moravian College. Aidan’s younger sister Meghan is an up-and-coming sports success of her own. Aidan said, “Like any baseball player I hope to be drafted into the major leagues, but I plan on being a five-year MBA major at St. John's University.”

Aidan’s mother, Janet McDermott, had this to say about the day’s events: "As a parent, you try to assist each child in obtaining their goals and dreams. Aidan worked really hard for this, and I am a very proud parent.”
