EDISON, N.J. – Coming off a dominating 23-point victory over Colonia last Thursday, the South Plainfield High School girls varsity basketball team couldn’t ride the hot hand as the J.P. Stevens Hawks flew over the Lady Tigers 45-37 Tuesday evening.
The Hawks (12-7) swooped in fast, soaring out to a 20-7 lead over the Lady Tigers (8-11) after the first quarter, and led 27-15 at the half.
Molly Yelencsics for Stevens netted a game-high 17 points to go along with her team-leading seven rebounds. Her four free throws aided an 8-0 advantage at the charity stripe over South Plainfield.
Stevens’ Kathy Tong poured in 10 points while Rebecca DiSerio (seven points), Jamyra Maye (six points) and Laya Paladugu (four points) each contributed as part of a balanced attack.
South Plainfield was led by Caity Hughes and Sara Cargill, who totaled 14 points and 12 points respectively for the game.
The Lady Tigers outscored the Hawks 7-2 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit given up in the opening frame.
South Plainfield returns home on Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff against the Woodbridge Barrons.
