EDISON, NJ - The South Plainfield High School Varsity Competition Cheer Squad kicked off their 2015 season with a bang, competing at the Bishop George Ahr High School Cheer Competition on January 17th, and taking home a coveted first place finish. The squad competed in the Medium Varsity Division, always a highly competitive division with a lot of teams. There were six other squads also competing in the Medium Varsity division at the Bishop Ahr competition, making this first place finish even more impressive.
South Plainfield Tigers’ Coach Maria Sottiriou was thrilled with the results, saying “this squad of girls has been working so hard since the summer, improving their tumbling and stunting skills. I am so proud to see their hard work pay off in such a visible way at this first competition.” Coach Mallory Christ added “after reviewing the squad’s strengths and weaknesses from last year, each and every girl has focused on particular skills, and the results have been amazing. We still have more to improve but this was a great way to start our season.”
The SPHS Comp squad is comprised of 18 girls, seniors Wiktoria Blazejowicz, Alyssa Capone, Lauren DiCellis, Zoe Falcone, Shannon Fonti, Casidhe Holobowski, Chelsea Housel, Erin Jones, Emily Smith, and Lauren Zekas ; juniors Brittany DellaSala, Jamie Donato, and Jessica Ortiz; sophmore Cassidy DeGrazio and freshman Hannah Dunn, Lailah Goldberg-Mota, Kristi Maher and Alea Watson. In addition to Coaches Maria Sottiriou and Mallory Christ, volunteer coach Wendi Donato also helps out regularly with the squad’s practices.
The squad’s next competition is at Woodbridge High School on January 25th.
