SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Gus Schmitt has resided in the borough since 1966 and has been an active member of the South Plainfield Senior Center for the past 10 years.

While the center’s day trips and parties are what he likes most about being a member, Schmitt is also dedicated to helping to ensure that the activities members enjoy run smoothly.

“Gus always has a wide smile and is always the first to ask if I need any help,” said Tree Olano, director of the South Plainfield Senior Center. “Whether to be setting up the breakfast bar, cleaning tables, setting up chairs for lunch, watering the garden or lending a helping hand to our more delicate seniors, Gus is always the first to step up. Always saying, ‘no problem. I am happy to help.’”

Throughout the year, Schmitt also delivers the center’s trip fliers to local businesses in town; prepares the 50/50 raffles for the various parties; and assists in organizing the buses for the casino trips. Additionally, every Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays Schmitt picks up donated bagels from In and Out Bagels and delivers them to the center by 7:30 a.m.

In addition to the senior center, Schmitt is also an active member of Sacred Heart Church. He celebrates his birthday in October and tries not to miss being at the center on the days his favorite lunch – a cheese omelet with hash browns and sausage – is served.

“Volunteers are such a vital part of the center I’m so grateful to all of them,” said Olano. “Over the past five years, the senior center has flourished and the volunteers here are amazing.”
